Biden administration announces $39 billion in student debt relief for 804,000 borrowers

The relief will be given to borrowers on income-driven repayment plans, with the remaining balances canceled after 20 or 25 years of payments. The Education Department will fix the counting of monthly payments and notify eligible borrowers. Biden intends to base his debt relief plan on the Higher Education Act, despite the court's ruling, and will undergo a public comment period before implementation.
