Law firms calls for Jackson to repeal security camera ordinance
SUMMARY: The Institute for Justice (IJ) sent a letter to Jackson, Mississippi, urging city leaders to repeal an ordinance mandating gas stations and convenience stores to install security cameras connected to the Jackson Police Department (JPD). Approved by the Jackson City Council in April 2024, the ordinance requires businesses to set up surveillance systems within 120 days and pay a $950 fee. IJ argues this violates constitutional rights. “The city council is turning Jackson into a police state and singling out certain businesses to pay for it,” stated IJ Attorney Jared McClain, emphasizing that surveillance demands shouldn't infringe on constitutional freedoms.

SUMMARY: Red Lobster has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy shortly after announcing the closure of nearly 100 restaurants. Contributing factors include rising lease and labor costs, inflation, and operational missteps, such as the decision to offer “Ultimate Endless Shrimp” regularly, leading to significant financial losses. The company plans to remain open with a smaller footprint. Thai Union Group, a co-owner, intends to exit its investment. Red Lobster's estimated liabilities range from $1 billion to $10 billion. CEO Jonathan Tibus emphasized that restructuring will address financial challenges and focus on growth. The company will also implement fewer limited-time offers to stabilize finances.
