Health Officials Report Mississippi’s First Human Case of West Nile Virus for 2020

Today the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) reports the first human case of West Nile Virus (WNV) for 2020. The case was reported in Claiborne County.
In 2019, Mississippi had a total of 15 WNV cases and no deaths.
“This is a reminder that even though we are in the midst of ongoing transmission of COVID-19, West Nile virus has not gone away,” said MSDH State Epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers. “We are approaching the time of year when WNV is most active in Mississippi, so it’s important to protect yourself.”

Today was the last drive-thru immunization fair for new or returning students along the Coast.
This was the last of a series of drive-thru fairs and last chance to get compliance forms and shots before school starts. These immunization fairs were free, all parents needed to provide was their ID, child’s shot records, and insurance card.
