Creating healthy communities with Mississippi Tobacco Free Coalition
SUMMARY: Patricia Taylor, director of the Mississippi Tobacco Free Coalition for Forest, Jones, and Perry counties, discusses the coalition’s mission to promote public health by preventing youth tobacco use, reducing secondhand smoke exposure, and addressing tobacco-related disparities. Formed in 2008 by the Mississippi State Department of Health, the coalition partners with schools, faith-based organizations, health advocates, businesses, and community spaces to reach a broader audience. With rising concerns over youth vaping, the coalition prioritizes this issue. Communities seeking to establish smoke-free zones can visit CCApHhf.org or the Mississippi Department of Health website for assistance and resources to quit smoking are available at 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

The Mississippi Tobacco Free Coalition offers several free resources and programs to help people quit tobacco use and make communities healthier.

MSDH inspects Chapel Ridge Apartments
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Department of Health (MSDH) and city leaders inspected Chapel Ridge Apartments in Jackson due to poor living conditions and trash overflow. City Councilman Vernon Hartley is advocating for an emergency declaration to use city and state resources to address the issues. The apartments, considered private property, limit the city’s ability to intervene fully. Hartley hopes declaring it a public health hazard will enable cleanup efforts, such as providing dumpsters. The trash problem has persisted for almost a month, and a motion for a potential cleanup process will be introduced at the next city council meeting.
