Scott Berry reaches win No. 500 as Southern Miss head baseball coach
Southern Miss head baseball coach Scott Berry picked up his 500th career win with the Golden Eagles Thursday night as his team took down Old Dominion 4-2 in Norfolk, Va.
The Golden Eagles were led on the mound by ace Tanner Hall, who pitched 7.2 innings of one-run ball while striking out seven. From the plate, Slade Wilks and Danny Lynch each drove in a pair of runs to help Southern Miss to its third-straight victory.
Leading up to Thursday's game, Berry spoke with reporters about reaching No. 500.
“I don't ever keep track of that stuff,” Berry said. “I just show up, watch our guys play and enjoy watching them play good baseball. It's part of it. There are a lot of people who play into it… It's not anything somebody does by themselves. It's shared by a whole lot of people.”
Berry, who is in his 14th season in Hattiesburg, has won 40 or more games in each of the last six seasons – not including the canceled 2020 season – which is the longest string of any Division I program….

Changes how law enforcement handles mental illness
SUMMARY: Mississippi lawmakers passed House Bill 1640, limiting the time people can be held in jail awaiting mental health care. The law states that individuals awaiting civil commitment can only be held for 48 hours unless facing criminal charges. The aim is to provide timely mental health treatment rather than keeping individuals in jail. The law will go into effect on July 1. Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott believes these changes are needed to address mental health issues in county jails. While it's a step in the right direction, more treatment facilities are needed to expedite the process and prevent unnecessary stays in jail.
