Walk for Diabetes set for October in Jackson

SUMMARY: Over 300,000 people in Mississippi have diabetes, with 75,000 unaware that they have the disease. The Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi will host the annual Walk for Diabetes Metro to raise funds for programs that aid those with the disease. All money raised will stay in the to fund educational and assistance programs for adults and with diabetes. The will include a one-mile fun walk and a three-mile walk on October 1st. Jackson State 's Women's Basketball Coach Tomekia Reed and her son will serve as honorary chairs for the event.

SUMMARY: Hot and steamy weather on May 9th led to intense storms in east Mississippi and Alabama. The atmosphere in showed extreme instability, with high convective available potential energy, dry at mid-levels, and deep moisture. This combination created strong updrafts, hail growth, and potential for severe wind gusts. Despite little low-level shear, the storms became intense due to extreme buoyancy and rapidly rising air potential. Tornadogenesis was unlikely due to the lack of shear near the surface.
