VIDEO: Are tornado sirens still needed? It’s a question many folks are asking
SUMMARY: Government agencies are testing warning systems to ensure emergency alerts are effective in keeping people safe. While tornado sirens are a traditional method, other technology such as phones, apps, and TVs are becoming more popular for weather alerts. However, sirens require frequent and costly repairs. Many people now rely on multiple methods, including cell phones, NOAA Weather Radio, and TV, to stay informed about severe weather. Some argue that with advancements in technology, sirens may not be as critical as they used to be. Alternative methods like Code Red and weather apps provide additional ways to stay weather alert.
Many folks are questioning if tornado sirens are still important in this age of technology. WTVA's Sami Roebuck talked to people in Chickasaw county about the issue.
SUMMARY: Ellisville State School provided an update on their Cemetery preservation project, where interns from USM helped locate buried remains of families. The interns created a digital map of the cemetery to locate sunken headstones. A professor from USM used ground penetrating radar with a 400 megahertz antenna to locate unmarked or mismarked graves. The radar sends a signal into the ground and maps where it returns to identify anomalies indicating burials. The cemetery was active from the 1920s to the 1980s, with approximately 150 people buried there. The process takes 3 to 4 hours and will result in a three-dimensional model of the area.
