Tropical Update 10/5/23
SUMMARY: The forecast for the evening in south Mississippi is cloudy skies. In the tropics, there are two weather systems to monitor. The first is Tropical Storm Philipe, located 400 miles south of Bermuda with winds at 50 mph. Bermuda is experiencing showery and squally weather, and Philipe is expected to move northwards towards the island and weaken into a non-tropical system. The second system in the Eastern Atlantic has a 30% chance of development, but is currently struggling with wind shear. Development may occur towards the end of the week, with the potential for it to become a named system called Sean.

SUMMARY: Severe weather, including strong winds and heavy rain, caused major damage in Hinds, Madison, and Rankin counties. Trees fell on homes, power lines were knocked down, and power outages affected thousands of homes and businesses. One person was injured, and many others had close calls. Streets were impassable, and heavy rain caused a sinkhole in Belhaven. Flooding was also a problem in Clinton, with one family experiencing their home flooding for the fourth time in a year and a half. Crews worked to restore power and clear debris, while families were left figuring out their next steps amidst the destruction.

SUMMARY: Belhaven advances to the conference semifinals with an 11-2 win over LaGrange. In other baseball action, Jackson Prep and MRA face off in a crucial game three in the 6A semifinals, with the winner advancing to the championship. Prep dominates with an 11-1 victory, led by Thomas Cross and Kevin Roberts. Brandon and Northwest Rankin battle for a spot in the state championship, with Brandon coming out on top 6-3 in game one. In the 2A softball playoffs, Pisgah defeats Clarkdale 8-1. Northwest Rankin softball also advances to the state final with an 18-2 win over Ocean Springs. Warren Central takes game one in baseball.
In high school baseball Jackson Prep advances to the 6A MAIS Finals while Brandon picks up a big win over Northwest Rankin in game one of their 7a South State series. Pisgah is victorious in the 2A South State and other scores from state playoff baseball and softball action on Friday night.

SUMMARY: The Tigers are getting ready for the NCAA tournament after winning their first SWAC title in 13 years. In Clinton, the Choctaws of Mississippi College are in control of their regional after a 6-3 win over Tampa. McCall Lee and Ashley Light Cap helped put the Choctaws ahead early in the game. The Choctaws made clutch plays on defense to secure the win, with Camryn Bailey forcing a game-ending ground out. The team's ability to support each other and finish the game strong was praised by their coach. They advance to the regional final with confidence and pride.
The Mississippi College softball team is one win away from the NCAA Division II Super Regionals. The Choctaws held off Tampa for a 6-3 on Friday afternoon
