Stolen 19th century rifle returned to Mississippi Department of Archives and History
SUMMARY: A 19th century Mississippi rifle that was stolen while on loan at Beauvoir in Biloxi during the 1970s has been returned to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. The rifle, donated by the daughter of Charles H. Gibbs, was used by Gibbs in the Mexican-American War. FBI special agent Randolph Deaton expressed gratitude for the collaboration between law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, museum professionals, historians, and subject matter experts that led to the rifle's return. The rifle will be displayed alongside the cartridge case used by Gibbs in the war at the Museum of Mississippi.
