Skilled to Work – Run a pawn shop
SUMMARY: Northeast Mississippi Community College is sponsoring a program called “Build the Work Story” that highlights various career paths. One option they mention is going into business for yourself, such as opening a pawn shop. Mike's Pawn Shop in Tupelo, Mississippi has been in business for 35 years and provides a way for people to get quick cash by selling items. The owner, Mike Kidd, explains that running a pawn shop does not require a college education, but rather skills that can be developed over time. He emphasizes the importance of consistency and being reliable. Being in the pawn shop business allows you to come across a variety of interesting items, from guns and antiques to video games and musical instruments. Mike also mentions the value of learning about people and the items they bring in. The shop works closely with local law enforcement to ensure that stolen merchandise is not pawned. Despite a few questionable incidents, Mike finds most people to be good-hearted. He has been in the business for 34 years and plans to continue for another 20.
Mike's Pawn Shop in Tupelo has been there for decades now and built a name for itself in the community.
