Recently-opened Tourism Center providing boost Laurel had hoped for
SUMMARY: The City of Laurel made several changes and improvements to the City Beautiful over the course of 2023. One major addition to the City Beautiful was a visitors center for tourists and residents to learn about the historic town. The visitors center, which previously housed 6 apartment units, has now been entirely transformed into a place of history and is a popular place to visit. The center recently added electric car charging stations and is expected to see a spike in the number of visitors in the next few months. The visitors center is located at 601 Leontyne Boulevard and construction on other features for the center are expected to be completed soon.

SUMMARY: A rare emergence of periodical cicadas, known as 13-year cicadas, is currently taking place, filling the air with their distinctive sound. These cicadas only emerge every 13 years, but when they do, they come out in large numbers. While they may not be visible, their loud singing is hard to miss. The males sing to attract females, leading to a cacophony of noise in the trees. The cicadas can also have impacts on trees, as the females lay their eggs in twigs, sometimes causing them to break. The cicadas are expected to last until the first week of June, so be sure to enjoy their song while it lasts.
A rare brood of cicadas is making its presence felt in north Mississippi and the South.
