One killed, six injured in Jones County crash

SUMMARY: A two-vehicle crash on Sharon-Sandersville Road in Jones County, Miss., at around 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 23, resulted in one fatality and six injuries. Responding to the accident, the Jones County Fire Council found a Nissan sedan facing east in the westbound lane and a Dodge minivan off the road in the eastbound lane. Among the injured, four were critically hurt and two sustained moderate injuries. Emergency responders closed the road for over an hour to manage the situation. (Courtesy: Jones Co. Fire Council)

Bond set for West Point couple accused of killing their child

SUMMARY: A West Point couple, Donovan Jeffers and Quiyona Pederson, were given a $300,000 bond each after being accused of killing their child. They were extradited from West Virginia and charged with murder after hospital staff reported possible abuse when the baby arrived in the emergency room in November 2022. The child was flown to Jackson and placed on life support before passing away. Autopsy results revealed shaken baby syndrome as the cause of death. Jeffers is a former West Point Police Officer. The U.S. Marshals had been searching for the couple.

One in custody after 18-year-old shot at Jackson apartment complex

SUMMARY: An 18-year-old was shot in the upper body at a Jackson apartment complex and taken to the hospital for treatment. The incident occurred at Pine Ridge Gardens Apartments on Rebel Woods Drive on May 10. Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones confirmed that the victim's condition is currently unknown. A person of interest has been detained and anyone with information about the shooting can contact the Hinds County Sheriff's Office at 601-352-1521.

Mississippi governor requests FEMA assistance for 6 counties after April storms

SUMMARY: Governor Tate Reeves of Mississippi has requested Individual Assistance from FEMA for six counties impacted by severe storms in April 2024. The counties include Hancock, Hinds, Humphreys, Madison, Neshoba, and Scott. The request comes after the validation of the number of homes destroyed or severely damaged in each county. If approved, Individual Assistance can provide grants for housing and repairs, low-cost loans for property losses, and other programs for recovery. Mississippi must meet FEMA requirements for approval. The declaration is meant to help residents restore, rebuild, and recover from the effects of the disaster.
