No. 3 seed UConn celebrates Auriemma’s 70th birthday with 86-64 first-round win over Jackson State
SUMMARY: Paige Bueckers and UConn gifted coach Geno Auriemma with a 30th consecutive first-round win in the NCAA Tournament for his 70th birthday. Bueckers scored 28 points, leading the Huskies to an 86-64 victory over Jackson State. Aaliyah Edwards added 20 points and 10 rebounds. UConn led early and held a 28-point advantage. Jackson State's Ti'lan Boler scored 25 points. UConn will face the winner of Syracuse vs. Arizona next. Coach Auriemma received a birthday shirt from Bueckers and joked about needing a nap. Jackson State coach Tomekia Reed praised her team for representing HBCUs. UConn is 31-2 in first-round games and has 27 seasons with 30 wins.

Former Mississippi police officer, wife charged in death of child
SUMMARY: Former West Point police officer Donovan Jeffers and his wife Quiyona Pederson have been charged with murder in connection to the death of their four-month-old child. The couple brought the infant to the hospital with head and neck injuries in November 2022, and the State Medical Examiner's Office determined the injuries were a result of abuse. Arrest warrants were issued, but the couple fled the state and were arrested in West Virginia in April 2024. They have since been booked into the Clay County Detention Center and each received a $300,000 bond.

Mississippi woman accused of stealing $31K in SNAP benefits
SUMMARY: Ashley Johnson from Copiah County, Mississippi has been charged with fraudulently receiving $31,259 in SNAP benefits by not accurately reporting her household income and composition to the Mississippi Department of Human Services. After a SNAP fraud investigation, she was served an arrest warrant in April 2024. The case was referred to the Copiah County District Attorney's office and an indictment was secured in March 2024. Johnson is accused of stealing a total of $70,000 in SNAP benefits.

Jackson mayor declares State of Emergency due to storm damage
SUMMARY: Jackson Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba declared a State of Emergency after a severe storm caused damage in the area. The storm brought heavy rain and strong winds, leading to power outages and a boil-water alert for surface water customers. The O.B. Curtis Water Treatment Plant lost power, resulting in low water pressure. The State of Emergency will be reviewed every seven days until the situation improves. The mayor ordered all city agencies and departments to provide assistance and follow emergency protocols. Power at the water treatment plant was restored at 7:00 a.m. after the storm.
