Monument at Vicksburg national park honors Black Civil War soldiers
SUMMARY: The Vicksburg National Park honors the memory of the battle that took place there, with numerous monuments. Robert Major Walker, the first black mayor of Vicksburg, pushed for recognition of the role of black soldiers in the battle. It took 16 years for a monument honoring black soldiers to be erected, and it stands as a reminder of their bravery and sacrifice. The monument represents the past, present, and future, with the soldier in the middle leaning on his comrades for support, symbolizing the sacrifice and blood made on the battlefield. This monument serves as a physical reminder of the significant role that black soldiers played in gaining their own freedom.
