Mississippi’s Republican-led House passes Medicaid expansion bill
SUMMARY: The Republican-led Mississippi House passed a bill to expand Medicaid benefits to 138% of the federal poverty level, potentially covering about 250,000 people. Mississippi has the highest rate of preventable deaths in the U.S. and struggles with health care indicators. Republican opposition to Medicaid expansion has weakened, with a work requirement included in the proposal. Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann believes Mississippi could follow Georgia's model for expansion. The Biden administration may not approve a work requirement waiver, leading to potential legal action. The bill now moves to the state Senate for consideration. Democrats advocate for their own Medicaid expansion plan.
