In this episode of Mississippi Stories, Mississippi Today Editor-At-Large Marshall Ramsey talks to Neil Woodall, Jr. about his recovery from opioid pain pills.
Woodall had the world going his way. A successful student athlete at Millsaps college, little did he know how his life would change due to a freak hunting accident. Shot in the face and chest, Woodall dealt with a painful recovery. Part of the recovery involved opioid pain pills. After his recovery and healing, he discovered that the pills also helped mute a deeper pain he was experiencing — fear and lack of self esteem. Soon the substance that helped ease his pain began causing it. Woodall shares his motivational journey — from his fall to his triumphant recovery and a new life based on his faith.

SUMMARY: A judge in Hinds County, Mississippi has allowed the brother of Dau Mabil to conduct an independent autopsy after Dau's body was found in the Pearl River in Lawrence County. Dau went missing in March, and foul play is suspected by his family. Dau's widow, Karissa Bowley, has consented to the autopsy. The judge ruled that the Mississippi Department of Public Safety can keep Dau's body for up to 30 days for investigation before the independent autopsy is conducted. This decision comes amidst a legal battle over who has the right to request the autopsy.

SUMMARY: Beth Ann White is currently on trial for causing a crash that killed a mother and her six-month-old son, while also leaving the mother's two other children with brain and spinal injuries. White's blood alcohol content was three times the legal limit at the time of the crash, and she has been indicted on four counts of aggravated DUI. After the first trial ended with a hung jury, White was re-indicted and the retrial is currently ongoing. The defense is arguing whether White was actually under the influence at the time of the crash. The state has presented its case and the defense has not called any witnesses.

SUMMARY: A Silver Alert has been issued for 55-year-old Joseph Turner from Jackson, Mississippi, who was last seen on May 1. Turner was walking in an unknown direction wearing an Army-colored hoodie, red shirt, and blue jeans. He suffers from a medical condition that may impair his judgment. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is seeking information on his whereabouts, and anyone with information is asked to contact the Jackson Police Department. In other news, a Biloxi councilman has pleaded guilty to a drug conspiracy involving vape shops.
