Legislation introduced to shut down Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman
SUMMARY: Mississippi lawmakers are considering Senate Bill 2353, which aims to close down the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman. Introduced by Democratic Sen. Juan Barnett, the bill proposes a four-year process to phase out Parchman starting July 1, relocating inmates and staff to other facilities. A portion of the 18,000-acre prison could be leased for various uses, and a facility for treating inmates with mental illness would be established. Parchman, criticized for poor living conditions and inhumane treatment, recently regained national accreditation after renovations. The bill is currently under review by Senate committees.
