Knitting Knockers help breast cancer survivors
SUMMARY: Shirley Swoope discovered Knitted Knockers, a non-profit organization that provides crochet or knitted prosthetics to women who have undergone mastectomies, while looking for a way to give back. Despite not knowing how to knit at the time, Shirley decided to learn and has since knitted knockers for women in all 50 states and 48 countries. The prosthetics are free because the organization operates without any salaried staff, and volunteers like Shirley pay for their own supplies. Shirley estimates that she has made around 1,000 prosthetic breasts over the years, and receiving a phone call from a woman expressing gratitude for her gift brought her joy.
