Presidential Medal of Freedom awarded to Medgar Evers
SUMMARY: President Barack Obama signed a care law into effect in 2010, honoring late civil rights activist Medgar Evers with the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom. Evers, a World War II veteran and NAACP field secretary, was tragically shot and killed in 1963 by a member of the Ku Klux Klan. Despite two mistrials, justice was eventually served when Byron De La Beckwith was found guilty of Evers's murder and sent to prison. Evers's legacy serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during the civil rights movement and the ongoing struggle to heal the soul of the nation.
