C2 Voter Intimidation
SUMMARY: Leaders of the State NAACP have expressed concern over voter intimidation after Capitol Police officers set up a checkpoint close to the organization's offices near Jackson State University one day before Mississippi's general election. The heavy police presence near the historically black university is seen as a form of modern-day voter intimidation. The NAACP believes that students may be deterred from coming to campus and voting due to the presence of law enforcement. The Capitol Police stated that their presence was in response to a request for enhanced patrols following a shooting death on campus. The Department of Public Safety denies any attempts to suppress voters.
