JPS holds stakeholder session to hear from community

SUMMARY: Leaders in the Jackson Public School District are seeking input from the community for their upcoming five-year strategic plan. A stakeholder session was held at Kirksey Middle School to gather feedback on what is working well within the district and areas that can be improved. Superintendent Dr. Errick Greene emphasized the importance of honest feedback from students, family members, and the community. The district will take the information gathered from these sessions into consideration as they develop their new plan. Another stakeholder meeting is scheduled for April 11 at Cardozo Middle School.

The ceremony serves as a bridge between student life and becoming an alum of the university, connecting graduates to the “Long Blue Line” of past alumni. Each student received a live magnolia flower, where the leaves symbolize strength and the blossoms represent prosperity, as they move on to the next stage of their lives. The W also held two graduation ceremonies to cap off the event. The tradition of Mag Chain is a meaningful way for graduates to stay connected even as they go their separate ways.

Capitol police arrest man for Trustmark Bank robbery

SUMMARY: A 46-year-old man was arrested in connection to a bank robbery at Trustmark Bank in Jackson. The man handed a note demanding money to a teller, who complied. The suspect, David Barrett, fled the scene in a vehicle towards Flowood. Capitol police recovered the stolen $734.50 and arrested Barrett, charging him with robbery. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Capitol Police Chief Bo Luckey thanked officers and investigators from multiple departments for their swift response and collaboration in apprehending the criminal.

Medgar Evers to receive Presidential Medal of Freedom

SUMMARY: Medgar Evers, a civil rights leader and World War II veteran from Mississippi, will posthumously receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Evers was assassinated in 1963 and played a key role in organizing voter registration drives during the Civil Rights Movement. President Biden made the selection, adding Evers to a list of distinguished Mississippians who have won the award. Evers will join the likes of James Earl Chaney, Fred Haise, B.B.
