Jackson man receives Star of Life award for response to Mudbug Festival shooting
SUMMARY: Preston Crotwell, a Jackson native and part-time employee for AMR, received the Star of Life award—an esteemed recognition among frontline EMS responders. Crotwell was honored for his exemplary service during the 2022 Mudbug Festival shooting, where he and his partner, Tim Shanks, provided critical treatment at the scene until additional help arrived. Following his coworkers' nomination, Crotwell traveled to Washington D.C. with Shanks to accept the award. Each year, over a million EMS caregivers are nominated nationwide, but only around 100 are chosen for the distinction. Crotwell noted the inspiration drawn from meeting other awardees with extraordinary stories.

SUMMARY: Brittany Carter's conviction for second-degree murder in connection to the death of Chornell Mayfield was upheld by the Mississippi Court of Appeals. She was sentenced to 40 years in prison, with 10 years suspended, and an additional five-year term for possession of a stolen firearm. SUMMARY: Governor Tate Reeves of Mississippi signed the Student Funding Formula to replace MAEP, bringing $250 million to public schools. Squatted vehicles will be banned in the state. The Capitol Complex Improvement District boundaries will expand, including Jackson Academy, Spann Elementary, and McLeod Elementary. Capitol police will have primary jurisdiction in this area starting July 1, 2024.
