Heat taking toll on farmers, crops, livestock
SUMMARY: Mississippi farmers and ranchers are struggling to keep their animals and crops alive in the extreme summer heat. Farmer Van Killen uses an irrigation system to keep plants growing at his Madison County farm. Some plants, like squash and eggplants, can tolerate the heat better than others. The heat is also stressful for 1000 free-range chickens, causing them to lay fewer eggs. The biggest impact, however, is on the farm workers, with one worker even suffering from heat exhaustion while harvesting crops. South Mississippi cattle operations are also affected by the heat.
