Health literacy panel held at Southern Miss
SUMMARY: The School of Media and Communication at USM recently hosted a panel to discuss the issue of health literacy in Mississippi. The panel, which included State Health Officer Dr. David Edney, highlighted how the lack of health literacy has affected the state. Panelists discussed how poor education and poverty have contributed to a medical crisis, as many individuals lack the resources and understanding needed for proper healthcare treatment. Dr. Edney suggested that one solution to this problem is for physicians to learn how to use language that patients can understand and feel comfortable with. USM staff are also working towards improving health literacy through research, community engagement, and teaching medical students effective communication skills.
