Advocates demand more support for Mississippi hospitals

SUMMARY: Representative Summers visited Saint Dominic’s Hospital in as part of the “Save Our Hospitals” tour, meeting with workers who are advocating for more for struggling hospitals in Mississippi. The hospital recently closed its behavioral unit, resulting in over a hundred layoffs and patients being left without care. Representative Summers believes that expanding Medicaid could alleviate the issues faced by Mississippi hospitals, creating new , improving , retaining healthcare workers, and preventing young people from leaving the state. Healthcare experts estimate that expanding Medicaid could bring approximately a dollars per year to Mississippi. Governor Tate Reeves, however, has opposed expanding Medicaid.
