Governor calls for flags to fly at half-staff in honor of fallen George County deputy
SUMMARY: Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves ordered flags at half-staff to honor Deputy Jeremy Malone, killed in a routine traffic stop. Reeves' executive order recognizes Malone's sacrifice, as he died after attempting to stop Rickey Powell on Highway 98 in Lucedale. Powell, with a 25-year criminal history, shot Malone and was later killed after a police chase. Reeves calls Malone a hero, and the state will remember his service. Malone's funeral is set for Friday, with flags lowered until sunset to mourn his passing.

MDOT granted nearly $5 million to improve hurricane evacuation routes
SUMMARY: During Hurricane Preparedness Week, Mississippi was allocated nearly $5 million to upgrade evacuation routes. This funding, part of the federal PROTECT Grant, will enhance contraflow systems on I-55 and I-59, used exclusively for hurricane evacuations. The grant allows for extending contraflow routes and adding gates, signage, and mile markers to improve traffic flow on these highways. MDOT emphasizes the necessity of efficient evacuation strategies for coastal safety. The project, still in the design phase, is expected to start in 2025, with aims to bolster safety and efficiency during natural disasters.
