Gov. appoints new exec. dir. at Mississippi Development Authority
SUMMARY: Governor Tate Reeves has made changes at the Mississippi Development Authority, appointing William “Bill” Cork as Executive Director, P.J. Waldrop as Chief Operations Officer, and Steven McDevitt as Chief Investment Officer. Cork previously served as Deputy Director and Chief Economic Development Officer, and has three decades of experience in economic and industrial development in Mississippi and Texas. Waldrop comes from the Office of Military Affairs and helped establish the state's Defense Communities Development Council. McDevitt is moving from his position as Deputy Commissioner of Finance at the Mississippi Department of Public Safety. These changes aim to strengthen the state's economic development efforts.

SUMMARY: The Mississippi Department of Education reported that 75.7% of third graders passed the state reading assessment on the first try, a slight decrease from the previous year's 76.3% pass rate. In the Monroe County School District, 92.4% of third graders passed on the first attempt, the second highest percentage in the state, while the Baldwyn School District had the lowest pass rate at 45.8%. SUMMARY: Maurice Forte, a 29-year-old man from Jackson, Mississippi, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murders of his grandmother, mother, and pregnant sister in 2018. Forte was convicted on four counts of capital murder after fatally shooting the three women multiple times in their home. The victims were Forte's grandmother, mother, and sister who was seven-months pregnant. Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens stated that Forte showed “senseless violence” by shooting his grandmother eighteen times, his mother nine times, and his pregnant sister twice. Forte will serve life in prison without the possibility of parole for his actions.
