Auditor says state shouldn’t pay for some degrees
SUMMARY: A study released by State Auditor Shad White suggests that the state should reconsider how college education is funded. The study argues that taxpayer dollars should be allocated to majors that have higher job prospects, such as electrical engineering, nursing, or education, rather than majors that are less likely to lead to employment. White's views sparked debate, with some arguing that higher education should focus on expanding students' minds and promoting critical thinking. The study found that even in high-demand fields like engineering and business, a significant percentage of graduates do not stay in Mississippi for work. White recommends creating a study committee to determine the most and least needed programs and design a funding structure accordingly. The Institutions of Higher Learning Commissioner responded to the study by emphasizing the need to create more career opportunities and address the brain drain in Mississippi.
State Auditor Shad White released a report titled, Plugging the Brain Drain.
