SUMMARY: Medicaid expansion efforts in Mississippi failed due to disagreement among lawmakers on a final proposal. Republican Governor Tate Reeves opposes expansion, referring to Medicaid as “welfare.” House Medicaid Committee Chair Missy McGee expressed disappointment over the issue not progressing. The proposal included a work requirement, which was met with opposition from House Democrats. The Senate passed a version with a lower income threshold for eligibility. House Republicans suggested putting Medicaid expansion on the ballot for public opinion. Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann expressed regret over leaving many working Mississippians without healthcare coverage.
