House axes proposed financial aid bill

SUMMARY: Lawmakers are considering measures to protect brick and mortar and consumers while also providing funding for college students pursuing careers in technical fields like nursing and welding. However, a bill that would have provided money for college students was killed in a house committee due to concerns about funding. Dean David Collum emphasizes the importance of funding opportunities to programs that increase the capability of the workforce. Similarly, Representative Scoggin plans to reintroduce similar legislation in the next legislative to support students and industries in the Pine Belt region.

Pearl Community College were hopeful the measure would pass this year. Now, Dean of Career Technical Education Dr. James David Collum said he's hopeful there will be other legislation to with program costs.

Ellisville State School cemetery projects moving forward

SUMMARY: Ellisville School provided an on their Cemetery preservation , where interns from USM helped locate buried remains of families. The interns created a digital map of the cemetery to locate sunken headstones. A professor from USM used ground penetrating radar with a 400 megahertz antenna to locate unmarked or mismarked graves. The radar sends a signal into the ground and maps where it returns to identify anomalies indicating burials. The cemetery was active from the 1920s to the 1980s, with approximately 150 people buried there. The takes 3 to 4 hours and will result in a three-dimensional model of the area.

Columbia officer honored with national recognition

SUMMARY: Lieutenant Brenda Young, a school resource officer for the Columbia school district, has been named one of the best in the country and selected for an exceptional service award by the National Association of School Resource Officers. The announcement was made via a zoom call to the Columbia School District administrative offices. Young is one of the few officers nationwide to this honor, and she is to have her hard work recognized. She believes that impacting even one person's is fulfilling. Young will receive her award in person at a national conference in Phoenix, Arizona in July.
