Thursday night’s storm explained – Home – WCBI TV
SUMMARY: Hot and steamy weather on May 9th led to intense storms in east Mississippi and west Alabama. The atmosphere in Jackson showed extreme instability, with high convective available potential energy, dry air at mid-levels, and deep moisture. This combination created strong updrafts, hail growth, and potential for severe wind gusts. Despite little low-level shear, the storms became intense due to extreme buoyancy and rapidly rising air potential. Tornadogenesis was unlikely due to the lack of shear near the surface. Overall, the weather conditions on May 9th created a perfect environment for intense storms to develop.
