Bill to shutter most of Parchman passes first committee hurdle

Senate Bill 2353 aims to send inmates, staff, and programs to other facilities due to unconstitutional conditions at Mississippi prisons highlighted by the U.S. Department of Justice. The plan includes gaining operation of the Tallahatchie Correctional Facility. Some senators emphasized that simply moving inmates to another facility will not solve the problem. The bill, a name change for Parchman, now moves to the Senate Appropriations Committee for further consideration.

Man shot, killed at Jackson gas station

SUMMARY: One man, Joshua Bennet, was killed in a shooting at a gas station. The incident occurred at a Shell gas station on Northside on May 17. An 18-year-old has been in connection to the fatal shooting, but has not been identified. Detective Tommie Brown confirmed the arrest.
