Bill to shutter most of Parchman passes first committee hurdle
SUMMARY: A proposal to close most of the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman has passed the first hurdle in the Senate Corrections Committee. Senate Bill 2353 aims to send inmates, staff, and programs to other facilities due to unconstitutional conditions at Mississippi prisons highlighted by the U.S. Department of Justice. The plan includes gaining operation of the Tallahatchie Correctional Facility. Some senators emphasized that simply moving inmates to another facility will not solve the problem. The bill, including a name change for Parchman, now moves to the Senate Appropriations Committee for further consideration.
