Mississippi sees first pediatric flu death of 2023-24 season

SUMMARY: The Mississippi Department of reported the first pediatric influenza of the 2023-2024 season. This brings the total to 25 pediatric flu deaths in the state since 2008. Flu season in Mississippi usually reaches its peak between January and March. State Epidemiologist Dr. Kathryn Taylor emphasizes vaccination as the best protection, urging everyone over 6 months to get flu and shots. Flu vaccinations for are available at County Health Departments, and uninsured adults at high-risk can shots at MSDH clinics. Prevention tips include covering your mouth when coughing, staying home when sick, and frequent hand washing.
