Mississippi governor rejects revenue estimate, fearing it would erode support for income tax cut
SUMMARY: Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves rejected a revenue estimate from the Joint Legislative Budget Committee, fearing it would impede future income tax cuts he is advocating. Despite slower expected growth by the state economist, Reeves questioned the move to maintain the previous fiscal year's $7.5 billion estimate. An alternative estimate, $117 million higher, was ignored, which could challenge the income tax cut's support in the 2024 session. Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann considered the committee's projection realistic and conducive to tax reductions. Nonetheless, Reeves insisted on a higher estimate or a legislative commitment to pass an income tax bill before agreeing.
