Hurricane season officially begins today
SUMMARY: Emergency responders urge everyone to prepare for an above-average hurricane season, with weather experts predicting over 20 storms. Malary White from the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency stresses the importance of preparation, even for those away from the Gulf Coast. She highlights that hurricanes can have significant residual impacts such as flooding and power outages, citing Hurricane Ida's far-reaching effects. White advises people to create a plan and assemble a “go-kit” with essentials like food, water, medical supplies, batteries, and flashlights for at least three days. Hurricane Special 2024: Prepare Mississippi Pt. 3
SUMMARY: In Mississippi, officials closely monitor weather forecasts, especially for major hurricanes threatening the Gulf Coast. When evacuation orders are issued, a contraflow emergency plan can be implemented, reversing southbound lanes of I-55 and I-59 to facilitate evacuation. Newly improved with a $4.8 million grant, this system is activated within three hours. Tropical cyclones can cause inland flooding far from their coastal origins, as exemplified by storms like Katrina and Harvey. With global warming, heavier rains are possible. Preparation includes knowing flood-prone areas and having evacuation plans. Awareness and adherence to safety guidelines, like avoiding water-covered roads, are crucial.
