Eudora Welty library should be shut down, city fire marshal says
SUMMARY: The Eudora Welty Library in Mississippi is in a deteriorating condition and may need to be shut down. The recent rains have worsened the situation, with leaks throughout the building. The third floor is off-limits due to plastic tarps and buckets collecting rainwater. The Hinds Emergency Operations Center is also affected, with air purifiers and buckets needing to be emptied daily. The state fire marshal threatened to permanently close the building in 2017, but repairs were made to keep it open temporarily. However, the mayor is now working on a deal with the legislature to demolish the library and potentially create a green space in its place. The search for a new site is underway, but no timeline is provided.
