Sexual Battery Against a Student
SUMMARY: A former teacher and coach at Old Town Middle School in Madison County has been found guilty by a jury of sexual battery involving a 14-year-old female student. Martin Hatchett, 36, was convicted of having sexual contact with the student in February. The jury's decision comes amidst increased attention on cases of sexual misconduct by teachers towards students. This issue has resulted in numerous legal actions and settlements, costing schools and institutions more than $13 billion in the last three decades. The sentence for Hatchett is yet to be determined.

SUMMARY: The Jones County Veterans Services Center is relocating from downtown Laurel to Ellisville, specifically to the former nursing home on County Home Road. The new site will house the Veterans Service office, coroner's office, and drill court, with enhanced space, better facilities, and improved handicap accessibility. Dedicated veterans' parking will also be available. Veteran Service Officer Jeff Barnett highlighted the need for the move due to space and parking limitations at the current location. Minor improvements like painting and cleaning are planned. The relocation is expected within a month, with a brief service interruption during the move.

SUMMARY: The Covington County Sheriff's Department is investigating two separate drive-by shootings, one in February and the other on June 2. No one was injured in either incident, but some suspects were young teens. Sheriff Daryl Perkins is working with the DA's office to potentially charge these juveniles as adults. The June 2 incident involved four suspects firing into a home on Gray McGee Lane. Authorities also continue to search for 27-year-old Eric Barnes, a suspect in the February shooting on Joe Booth Road. Barnes, who is out on a $100,000 bond for a 2022 drive-by shooting, has not yet turned himself in.
