Religious exemptions for immunizations begin Monday
SUMMARY: Starting July 17, 2023, the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) will begin offering religious exemptions, in addition to medical exemptions, for vaccinations. This is in compliance with a federal court order from April 2023. Detailed information and the necessary forms are available on the MSDH website. Medical exemptions can be obtained by completing the required form with a licensed pediatrician, family physician, or internist. For religious exemptions, a parent or guardian must schedule an appointment at a county health department, watch a Vaccine Education Video, and complete the required form. The State Epidemiologist will review and approve the exemptions. MSDH emphasizes the importance of vaccinations and urges parents to consider them unless medically contraindicated. Since Mississippi has a strong immunization program, no measles cases have been recorded since 1992.
