Religious exemptions for immunizations begin Monday

SUMMARY: Starting July 17, 2023, the Mississippi Department of (MSDH) will begin offering religious exemptions, in addition to medical exemptions, for vaccinations. This is in compliance with a federal court order from April 2023. Detailed information and the necessary forms are available on the MSDH website. Medical exemptions can be obtained by completing the required form with a licensed pediatrician, physician, or internist. For religious exemptions, a parent or guardian must schedule an appointment at a county health department, watch a Vaccine Education , and complete the required form. The State Epidemiologist will and approve the exemptions. MSDH emphasizes the importance of vaccinations and urges to consider them unless medically contraindicated. Since Mississippi has a strong immunization program, no measles cases have been recorded since 1992.
