Red Cross declares national blood shortage ‘in wake of back-to-back climate disasters’
SUMMARY: The American Red Cross has announced that the national blood supply in the United States has reached critically low levels. The organization is urgently calling for blood donations due to the impact of climate disasters, which have caused a nearly 25% drop in blood supply levels since August. The lack of blood donations could pose a threat to patients with cancer, sickle cell disease, or anyone in need of emergency blood transfusions. The Red Cross cites recent hurricanes and low donor turnout as the main causes of the shortage. Donors of all blood types, especially platelets and type O blood, are urgently needed.
