MDOT granted nearly $5 million to improve hurricane evacuation routes
SUMMARY: During Hurricane Preparedness Week, Mississippi was allocated nearly $5 million to upgrade evacuation routes. This funding, part of the federal PROTECT Grant, will enhance contraflow systems on I-55 and I-59, used exclusively for hurricane evacuations. The grant allows for extending contraflow routes and adding gates, signage, and mile markers to improve traffic flow on these highways. MDOT emphasizes the necessity of efficient evacuation strategies for coastal safety. The project, still in the design phase, is expected to start in 2025, with aims to bolster safety and efficiency during natural disasters.

Mississippi senators back law requiring AM radio in every car
SUMMARY: Mississippi senators Wicker and Hyde-Smith are pushing for every new car in the U.S. to include AM radio, through the “AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act.” With support from 60 senators and 249 House members, the bipartisan bill, introduced by Senators Markey and Cruz, would mandate the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to ensure free AM radios in cars, citing its vital role in emergencies. The initiative counters automakers' recent trend of omitting AM radios due to electromagnetic interference, especially in electric vehicles. An identical House bill also has significant support.

Ole Miss student kicked out of fraternity for making racist gestures toward protester
SUMMARY: The Ole Miss Phi Delta Theta fraternity dismissed James “JP” Staples after he mimicked a primate at a Black student, Jaylin Smith, during a pro-Palestine protest – an act caught on video sparking outrage. The frat emphasized racist behavior clashes with its values. The NAACP's Ole Miss chapter has urged the expulsion of Staples along with Connor Moore, Jr., and Rouse Bouce for their conduct at the protest. The university, while not making any expulsions or arrests, is conducting an investigation into the incident. Chancellor Boyce noted this undermines efforts to distance from the university's racist history.
