Reeves approves legislation creating financial benefits program for volunteer firefighters

Over 9,000 volunteer firefighters in Mississippi will now be able to annual payments as an incentive to continue serving communities throughout the .

Governor Tate Reeves signed “The Mississippi Length of Service Award Program” (House Bill 521) into on Monday, allowing volunteers to receive up to $500 each year if a minimum number of service points are met.

Mississippi governor requests FEMA assistance for 6 counties after April storms

SUMMARY: Governor Tate Reeves of Mississippi has requested Individual Assistance from FEMA for six counties impacted by severe storms in April 2024. The counties include Hancock, Hinds, Humphreys, , Neshoba, and Scott. The request after the validation of the number of homes destroyed or severely damaged in each county. If approved, Individual Assistance can for housing and repairs, low-cost loans for property losses, and other programs for recovery. Mississippi must meet FEMA requirements for approval. The declaration is meant to restore, rebuild, and recover from the effects of the disaster.

Former Mississippi police officer, wife charged in death of child

SUMMARY: Former Point officer Donovan Jeffers and his wife Quiyona Pederson have been charged with murder in connection to the of their four-month-old child. The brought the infant to the hospital with head and neck injuries in November 2022, and the Medical Examiner's Office determined the injuries were a result of abuse. Arrest warrants were issued, but the couple fled the state and were in West Virginia in April 2024. They have since been booked into the Clay County Detention Center and each received a $300,000 bond.

Mississippi woman accused of stealing $31K in SNAP benefits

SUMMARY: Ashley Johnson from Copiah County, Mississippi has been charged with fraudulently receiving $31,259 in SNAP by not accurately her household income and composition to the Mississippi Department of Human Services. After a SNAP fraud investigation, she was served an arrest warrant in April 2024. The case was referred to the Copiah County District Attorney's office and an indictment was secured in March 2024. Johnson is accused of stealing a total of $70,000 in SNAP benefits.
