New historic markers unveiled for Vicksburg’s founding, oldest neighborhood

Two new historical markers have been unveiled in Vicksburg on First East and Adams Streets that highlight the 's founding and earliest residential and commercial area.

The markers, which were paid for by the City of Vicksburg and the Vicksburg Convention and Visitors (VCVB), are titled “Newit Vick's Original Vicksburg” and “Main Street Historic District and Amendment Area.”

“In dedicating these markers, we're acknowledging our town's rich history and, in a way, reflecting on how far we've ,” said Vicksburg George Flaggs, Jr. “People travel from all over the world to tour and experience Vicksburg, and these markers will us continue telling our unique story long after all of us are here.”

Each marker has been strategically located along one of five existing Heritage Trail Walking Routes, a product of past local partnership with the National Park Service's Lower Delta Initiative intended to showcase the history of Vicksburg…

Lafayette softball shuts out New Hope in game one of 5A quarterfinals

SUMMARY: Lafayette softball defeated New Hope 3-0 in one of the 5A quarterfinals, with Mabry Claire Eason pitching a complete game shutout. Tashika Carothers hit a shallow fly ball to center field, scoring Eason and Mary Kelley to get the Commodores' bats rolling early. The two teams will meet again in the next game, where Lafayette can clinch a spot in the semifinals with a win while New Hope is in a win or go home situation. The game is set for Saturday at 6 PM at Lafayette.
