Columbus man on the run after child sex crime conviction captured – Home – WCBI TV
SUMMARY: Elonzo Latham, convicted of a child sex crime, was apprehended after evading authorities for a week. He was arrested in south Columbus by Lowndes County deputies and U.S. Marshals. Latham, who did not return to court after a lunch break during his trial, was found guilty of sexually battering and impregnating a 13-year-old. MHP responds to 4 fatal crashes during 2024 Memorial Day Enforcement Period
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Highway Patrol concluded the 2024 Memorial Day Holiday Travel Period on May 27, issuing 7,026 citations, 118 DUIs, and 864 seatbelt violations. Troopers investigated 135 crashes, resulting in 53 injuries and four fatalities in Benton, Tunica, Itawamba, and Harrison counties. Compared to 2023, there were fewer citations (8,945 in 2023), seatbelt violations (961 in 2023), DUIs (170 in 2023), and crashes (156 in 2023), but more fatal crashes and fatalities (three each in 2023). MHP also assisted 90 motorists during the period.

Lee County Coroner asks for public’s help identifying body found
SUMMARY: The Lee County Coroner's office in Mississippi is seeking public assistance to identify a decomposed female body found on May 12 near Magazine Street in Tupelo. Coroner Carolyn Green described the body as that of a “very petite female.” The remains are currently undergoing autopsy and DNA extraction at the medical examiner's office.
