1A-4A wraps up regular season on Thursday

SUMMARY: This week, the 1A through 4A classifications in Mississippi high school football will wrap up their regular season on Thursday instead of Friday. This is to give the Mississippi High School Activities Association an extra day to create brackets for the playoffs, which will begin next week. However, there has been a shortage of referees this year, making it difficult to officiate all the games. One local referee cited a lack of monetary compensation as a reason for the shortage. Some referees also officiate junior college games, further reducing availability. The assigning secretary for District 1, Larry Riley, mentioned that they are always recruiting new officials for the future. The 5A through 7A classifications will finish their regular season next Thursday.
