Winter weather will not reduce number of mosquitoes in Mississippi

SUMMARY: Freezing weather does not drive out mosquitoes in the summer, according to experts at Mississippi State University. Most insect pests and mosquitoes survive in colder temperatures, as they are well adapted to winter survival strategies. Dr. Blake Leighton from the MSU Extension Service explains that some insects, like monarch butterflies, leave the area, while others have a specific life stage where they spend the winter. These native insects are capable of surviving winter, regardless of the temperature, and are not driven out by cold weather. Therefore, the freezing weather does not deter mosquitoes and other insect pests in the summer.

Experts with the MSU Extension Service said the winter weather will not affect the number of most insects.
