Tracking the Tropics: Looking back at the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season

SUMMARY: The 2023 Atlantic ended with 20 named storms, ranking fourth for the most-named storms in a year since 1950. Seven of those named storms were hurricanes, and three were major hurricanes. A strong El Niño climate pattern prevented many Atlantic cyclones from reaching the mainland U.S. Hurricane Idalia was the only hurricane to make landfall in the U.S., while Hurricane Lee brought hurricane-force winds and power outages to Maine. Record-breaking ocean temperatures storms to rapidly intensify, with Hurricane Otis being the strongest to make landfall in the eastern Pacific. With a strong El Niño in place, Florida and the coast states can expect a wet winter.

2nd Jackson man sentenced for bank fraud scheme

SUMMARY: Ronald Gardner, a man, was to 61 months in federal prison for conspiracy to commit bank fraud and aggravated identity . He and his co-conspirator, Anthony Craig Myrick, opened an account at a Jackson bank in someone else's name, deposited counterfeit U.S. Treasury checks, withdrew the cash, and used false identification cards. Gardner admitted to manufacturing the counterfeit checks and using another person's identity. The scheme affected at least 10 victims. Both Gardner and Myrick were indicted and pled guilty, with Myrick receiving a 26-month sentence. They were also ordered to pay restitution to the bank.

Multiple Vicksburg homes damaged by gunfire
