Tracking the Tropics: Hurricane season enters its busiest stretch
SUMMARY: August and September are the busiest months for hurricane formation in the Atlantic. This is due to African easterly waves, which are large energy waves that form when warm, dry air from Africa mixes with humid air over the Atlantic. About one in five of these waves go on to produce a tropical cyclone. Additionally, the presence of Saharan dust from the Saharan Desert normally inhibits tropical development, but by August the waves bring moisture, creating favorable conditions. Wind shear and warm surface water temperatures also contribute to hurricane development. Forecasters predict an above-average season for 2022.
