State senator wants Confederate flag painting replaced at Capitol
SUMMARY: State Senator Bradford Blackmon has introduced Senate Bill 2217, advocating for the replacement of a painting at the Mississippi Capitol that depicts two white-hair soldiers raising the Confederate flag. Blackmon believes the current artwork does not represent Mississippi’s history accurately and should be updated to make everyone feel comfortable. This bill comes after the state changed its flag in 2021. Blackmon’s bill suggests replacing the painting with one designed by a local artist. The House of Representatives has also introduced a companion bill to replace the flag in the painting with the current Mississippi flag. This issue stems from a historical painting that has now become controversial.
A demand is being made to remove a Confederate painting from the state’s capitol building.
