Local shrimpers say conditions not yet ideal for 2024 season
SUMMARY: Many shrimpers are heading west this weekend as inshore shrimp season opened on Thursday in Louisiana, although Mississippi waters remain closed. Min Trong, who sells shrimp from his van in Long Beach, is also preparing to open a seafood store. However, he notes that for the second consecutive year, shrimping conditions have been unfavorable, impacting prices. Factors like excessive freshwater and high winds are likely contributing to these poor conditions, pushing shrimp out. Trong anticipates shrimp season in Mississippi to open around mid-June but felt last year's season commenced too early, affecting prices negatively.
Minh Troung and other shrimpers say it'll be a few weeks before conditions are right for shrimping in the Mississippi Sound.
