School funding and ballot initiatives are among issues surviving in Mississippi Legislature
SUMMARY: Mississippi legislators are considering proposals to rewrite the public school funding formula. Senate Bill 2332 would revise the existing formula, while House Bill 1453 would introduce a new formula that would increase funding for poorer districts. The deadline for general bills and constitutional amendments for committee consideration has passed, with several bills still alive, including ones related to Medicaid expansion, a ballot initiative process, and defining sex. Bills that are dead include proposals to close the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman, shut down public universities, ban diversity programs on college campuses, prohibit abortion advertising, and remove a Confederate painting from the state Capitol.
